Surfer SEO alternatives are the tools that do the same job: they read the pages already ranking for a query, break them down and tell your text what it is missing compared with them. Terms, length, number of headings, questions covered. The output nearly always arrives as a score from 0 to 100.
Choosing between these tools is not the problem. The problem is that most of the lists you use to compare them are written by companies selling one of the tools on the list. We opened the organic results Google UK returns for surfer seo alternatives on 26 September 2026 and checked them against the official price lists. Of the six publishers whose pages we could read, three sell a product that appears in their own comparison. Two of them put it first. A fourth sells nothing of its own but links to the tools through affiliate codes without saying so.
Who writes the Surfer SEO alternatives lists
This is the UK first page, result by result, showing who publishes each page and where their own product ends up.
| Who publishes the list | Publisher's product on the list | Position given |
|---|---|---|
| SEOmatic | SEOmatic | head-to-head comparison against Surfer |
| Dageno AI | sells an AI visibility platform | article body not readable by our crawler |
| RankDots | RankDots | 4th of 15 (the headline says 14) |
| MADX Digital | none (SEO agency) | not applicable |
| WP SEO AI | WP SEO AI | 1st of 8 |
| InBound Blogging | none, but affiliate links with no disclosure | not applicable |
MADX Digital is the only publisher with nothing to sell in the list, and it sells SEO services instead. The query itself is small in the UK: about 110 searches a month (DataForSEO, Google UK, September 2026), against roughly 1,600 for surfer seo. It is still worth fighting over, because almost everyone searching it is about to pay for something.
Same plan, several different prices
We took the entry plans of the most cited tools and compared them with the official pricing pages, checked in September 2026. The gaps are not a matter of a few dollars.
| Plan | Price on the official site | Prices quoted by the first-page lists |
|---|---|---|
| Frase Starter | $39/month billed annually, $49/month without | $39 or $49 (RankDots, WP SEO AI), $45 (MADX Digital) |
| Clearscope Essentials | $129/month | $129 (WP SEO AI), "between $129 and $189" (RankDots), $189 (MADX Digital) |
| NeuronWriter Bronze | $23/month, $19/month billed annually | $19.12 (MADX Digital), $23 (RankDots, WP SEO AI) |
| Surfer entry plan | $49/month billed annually (Discovery) | $79 or $99 for an "Essential" plan (WP SEO AI), $89 (InBound Blogging), "around $89 to $99" (RankDots) |
| MarketMuse | acquired by Siteimprove, announced on 8 October 2024 | "Standard plans from $149" (RankDots), "starts for free" (MADX Digital), "steep price" (InBound Blogging) |
Surfer's own entry price appears as $79, $89 and $99 in three articles, and the plan name quoted by WP SEO AI no longer exists on Surfer's pricing page. The official figure is $49. On MarketMuse the picture is worse: the product was bought by Siteimprove almost two years ago, the announcement carries statements from Shane Paladin, CEO of Siteimprove, and Jeff Coyle, co-founder of MarketMuse, and the lists we read still present it as a standalone product with its own prices.
If you are weighing up a subscription, there is one rule: read the price on the site of whoever is selling it to you, never in a list. That applies to this article too.
What Surfer SEO actually costs
The official price list, billed annually, has five tiers: Discovery at $49/month for 120 articles created or optimised, Standard at $99/month for 360 articles and three seats, Pro at $182/month with automatic internal links and cannibalisation reports, Peace of Mind at $299/month with unlimited articles and API access, and Enterprise on a custom quote. There is also a separate plan, AI Search Analytics at $82/month, for tracking visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.
Two things the lists leave out. First, the headline price is the annual one, and paying month by month costs noticeably more. Second, Surfer's Humanizer is capped at 50,000 words a month with an active subscription, 1,000 words with a free account and 500 without an account, while the AI Detector has no usage limit.
The alternatives that hold up, with real prices
NeuronWriter, if budget is the constraint
The Bronze plan costs $23/month, or $19 billed annually ($228 a year), and includes 25 content analyses, 2 projects and 5 tracked queries. It goes up to Diamond at $117/month with 150 analyses and 50 projects. The free trial lasts 7 days on Gold plan terms. It appears in practically every list as the budget option, and that is the one point on which the lists agree.
Frase, if you write and optimise in the same place
Starter at $39/month billed annually with one seat, one site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month. Professional at $103 annually with 3 seats and 5 sites. Scale at $239. Extra seats cost $29/month each. The trial runs for 7 days with no credit card.
Clearscope, if you have an editorial team
Essentials at $129/month with 50 pages, 50 tracked prompts and 20 topic explorations a month. Business at $399. Users are unlimited on every plan, which changes the maths for a team of five or six writers: at that point Clearscope costs less than Frase Scale. The free trial is 14 days.
thruuu, if you only need SERP analysis
Starter at $13/month, $9.10 billed annually, for 75 SERP analyses. Pro at $33 ($23.10 annually) for 250 analyses. There is a free plan with 10 one-off credits and a catch for anyone working on a UK site: it only runs on Google.com in English, so it analyses the US results, not Google UK. The 196 countries and 151 languages are unlocked on the paid plans. It is the cheapest way into the whole category.
The suite you already pay for
If you already have a Semrush or SE Ranking subscription, check their content tools before adding another bill: Semrush has its SEO Writing Assistant and SE Ranking has a content marketing module, and both appear in several of the first-page lists. They score a draft against the ranking pages in the same way, using the keyword database you already work with. For tracking visibility in generative engines rather than in Google, we have covered the options in our round-up of the best AI visibility tools.
The advantage is not the editor, which is usually less refined than Surfer's. It is that you do not pay twice for keyword data, and that the analysis can be pointed at the UK database you already use for rankings.
What changes if your site targets the UK
The lists on the first page have something in common besides the conflict of interest: they are written for an American audience and none of the ones we read deals with the market the score is calculated on. Three questions change the choice.
Does the analysis read the right SERP? A score calculated on the top ten pages of Google.com says little about what it takes to rank on Google UK, where the competition for the same search intent is different: other publishers, other retailers, local results. Before subscribing, check that the settings let you choose the country, not only the language.
Does it work in the other languages you publish in? Surfer AI is documented in 18 languages, including German, Dutch, Polish, French, Spanish, Danish, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, Czech, Japanese, Norwegian, Romanian, Greek, Bulgarian and Hungarian. Whether the text it produces is actually any use is a separate question, which we covered in our articles on AI content and SEO and on AI detectors.
How much do you actually pay? Every tool here shows prices in US dollars and excluding tax. The exchange rate moves, a card charged in dollars may carry a foreign transaction fee, and VAT may apply on top. Compare the figure that reaches your statement, not the number printed in a table.
The demand side matters too. According to the ONS article Artificial intelligence in UK businesses: 2023 to 2026, published on 20 July 2026, about 35% of UK businesses with 10 or more employees used at least one AI technology in June 2026, roughly three times the 12% of September 2023. Lack of expertise is still cited as a barrier by up to 18% of businesses, depending on size band. A tool that nobody on the team knows how to drive gets abandoned after the second month, whatever its score.
The score is not what decides rankings
All of these tools optimise the same variable: how lexically similar your text is to the ones already ranking. It is a useful variable, and one of the last we touch.
On the Macropix project, for an Italian LED wall manufacturer, the movement came from elsewhere: the keyword monitor pubblicitario (advertising monitor), 390 searches a month, went from position 88 to 2, and schermo pubblicitario (advertising screen), 480 searches a month, from 73 to 2. In July 2026 macropix.it held 25.55% share of voice on the LED wall cluster, ahead of Amazon.it at 18.08%, with more than 100 keywords in the top three on Google Italy. The work behind those numbers is described in the article on SEO for manufacturing: site structure, cluster coverage, pages built on commercial intent. No content score appears anywhere in that story.
An optimisation tool is useful afterwards, when the page exists, the topic is the right one and you want to know whether you have left out something everyone else covers. Used earlier, it pushes you to write the average of the top ten results, which is exactly the kind of content that E-E-A-T criteria work against.
How to choose in half an hour
- Count the articles you actually publish in a month. If it is fewer than four, thruuu's entry plan at $9.10 billed annually covers it and saves you about $480 a year compared with Surfer Discovery.
- Count the people who need access. Beyond three, Clearscope's unlimited users change the maths more than any difference in features.
- Check that you can select Google UK, not only the English language. It is the check people skip most often, and the one that makes the score meaningless.
- Start the free trial on an article you have already published and that ranks. If the tool gives it a low score, the model does not read your niche well.
- Convert the dollar price at your card's rate, add VAT where it applies, and compare that number.
If the bottleneck is not optimising individual pieces but keyword research or building the editorial plan, none of these tools solves it: look at our selection of SEO software and keyword research tools instead. And if what you are missing is the method rather than the tool, the starting point is creating SEO content and setting up an SEO strategy for your blog. If you would rather skip that step and hand over the operational side, our SEO services and SEO for AI engines always start from an analysis of the SERP you actually compete in.
Frequently asked questions
One thing the industry rarely says out loud: the reason so many lists of alternatives to a single tool exist is that the keyword is cheap to target and brings in people with a credit card in hand. Every company selling an optimisation tool publishes one, puts itself near the top and updates it once a year by changing the number in the title. It is an acquisition model, not trade journalism, and recognising it saves you half a day of research. The check that really matters takes ten minutes: open the official pricing page, start the free trial on one of your articles that already ranks, and see whether the score it gets makes sense.
