Etsy SEO is the work on titles, tags, attributes, photos and customer service that gets a shop's listings to appear when someone searches for a product. There are two search engines to win over: Etsy's own search bar and Google. They work differently and reward different things.
The competition is wide. At the end of 2025 the marketplace had 5.6 million active sellers, 86.5 million active buyers and more than 100 million items for sale, according to the 2025 annual report Etsy filed with the SEC. In a catalogue that size, a listing that doesn't make the first rows doesn't sell.
Reading Google UK's first page for "etsy seo" (320 searches a month in the UK, DataForSEO, October 2026) on 10 October 2026, we noticed two things. The AI Overview at the top still says Etsy favours shipping under $6 or at no charge, without mentioning that the rule only applies to domestic listings in the United States, and some results date from years before the updates Etsy published between 2024 and 2026 on titles, renewals and shipping (one of them is a Reddit thread from three years ago). And none of them measures how Etsy pages rank on Google UK. Here you'll find Etsy's current official guidance, a table of outdated advice and a test on ten UK searches for handmade and personalised products.
How Etsy search works: matching first, then ranking
Etsy search works in two stages, described in the Seller Handbook guide How Etsy Search Works (August 2025). In the first, query matching, Etsy picks the listings whose words match the search. In the second, ranking, it puts those listings in order according to how likely the buyer is to purchase.
The practical consequence is simple: if a word doesn't appear in the title, tags, category, attributes or description, the listing doesn't even enter the race for that search. The rest of the work is about climbing the ranking, but without the match there's no ranking.
These are the ranking factors Etsy declares, taken from the official guide and from the page on search, advertising and recommendation ranking updated in October 2025:
| Factor | What it measures, according to Etsy | Where you can act |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well the title, tags, description, category and attributes match the search; exact matches can carry more weight | Title, tags, attributes |
| Listing quality | Photos, returns policy; for US domestic listings, the shipping price too | Photos, terms of sale |
| Customer service | Average review rating, message response rate and case rate over the last three months | Response times, on-time dispatch |
| Recency | New or renewed listings get a small, temporary boost, lasting from a few hours to a few days | Almost no useful room |
| Engagement | How many visitors become buyers; clicks, visits, favourites and purchases | Price, photos, listing page |
| Language and translations | Match with the shop's language; manual translations perform better than automatic ones | Language settings |
| Buyer habits | Context Specific Ranking: results personalised on each user's behaviour | None directly |
Etsy lists these factors without saying how much each one weighs. Anyone presenting one of them as "the number one factor" is interpreting, not quoting.
If you also sell on Amazon, search there follows other rules: you'll find them in our guide to Amazon SEO.
The Etsy SEO advice that no longer holds
A lot of the advice that goes round sellers' groups and guides comes from older guidance. Some of it was right when it was written. We set the most repeated tips against what Etsy publishes today.
| Advice that circulates | What Etsy says today | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Use all 140 characters of the title and fill it with keywords | Use fewer than 15 words, don't repeat words, move subjective adjectives ("perfect", "beautiful") to the description and take phrases like "gift for him" out of the title | Seller Handbook, April 2026 |
| Renew listings to get back to the top | The boost is small and lasts from a few hours to a few days; Etsy says renewing constantly isn't an effective strategy. Each renewal costs $0.20 | Seller Handbook, August 2025 |
| Keep shipping under $6 or disappear from search | The rule only applies to domestic listings in the United States (since 1 October 2024). Listings shipped from outside the US are excluded | Seller Handbook, October 2024 |
| Etsy's automatic translation is enough to sell abroad | According to Etsy's sales data, manually translated listings sell more than automatically translated ones | Seller Handbook |
| Put gift phrases in the title to catch people shopping for a present | "Aspirational" phrases like "gift for her" work in the tags, especially when there's no matching attribute | Etsy Help, tags |
The title is the most telling case. An old article in the Seller Handbook itself, written by Danielle Maveal, encouraged sellers to use all 140 available characters and explained that a word repeated in the title and tags gains strength. The April 2026 guide goes the opposite way. Anyone who learnt Etsy SEO years ago and hasn't checked since is optimising for a search engine that no longer exists.
The title: fewer than 15 words, key features first
Etsy's SEO guide for UK sellers asks for titles under 15 words, with the most important features first: colour, material, size. It adds a detail that matters for Google: search engines only show the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title. That's roughly the space of a meta title on an ordinary website.
An example on a real product. The title built the old way is "Beautiful Handmade Earrings Perfect Gift For Her Boho Earrings Moonstone Earrings Birthday Gift". The one that follows current guidance is "Moonstone and 925 sterling silver handmade drop earrings". The words "gift for her" and "birthday gift" don't disappear: they go in the tags.
Repeating the same word three times in the title was the trick Etsy now asks sellers to avoid, and on Google it's classic keyword stuffing. The reading test is the one we use for websites: if a customer reads the title aloud and understands what they're buying, the title works.
Since April 2026 Etsy has also offered an AI tool that suggests rewritten titles based on the title, photos and description. According to the documentation for the search visibility page, title suggestions are only available to shops whose language is set to English, so a UK shop sees them. Read them critically: Etsy is an American company and the suggestions may not use British spelling.
Tags: 13 phrases of up to 20 characters
Each listing has up to 13 tags and each tag can hold up to 20 characters, as Etsy's official help page on tags explains, with spaces among the characters allowed. A tag can be a short phrase rather than a single word, and it's the right place for searches that have no matching attribute.
There's a problem that guides written for the American market don't see: spelling. On Google UK "personalised gifts" gets 40,500 searches a month and "personalized gifts" 3,600; in the United States it's the reverse, 110,000 for "personalized gifts" and 3,600 for the British spelling (DataForSEO, Google Ads, October 2026). Etsy's help page on tags doesn't say whether search treats the two spellings as the same word, and its own examples use the American one ("minimalist jewelry"). On top of that, some of the longer British phrases don't fit in 20 characters.
| UK search | Characters | US spelling | Characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| gift for her | 12 | gift for her | 12 |
| handmade jewellery | 18 | handmade jewelry | 16 |
| personalised gifts | 18 | personalized gifts | 18 |
| personalised gifts for her | 26 (doesn't fit) | personalized gifts for her | 26 (doesn't fit) |
| personalised wedding favours | 28 (doesn't fit) | personalized wedding favors | 27 (doesn't fit) |
When the phrase doesn't fit, the fix is to split it over two tags that cover the words (for example "wedding favours" plus a tag on the personalisation) and leave the rest to the title, which has more room. If you sell mainly in the UK, write in British spelling and keep one spare tag for the American form of your most important phrase, so you're covered whichever way Etsy handles it. To choose which phrases to use, the method is the same as keyword research for a website: start from how the customer writes, not from what you call the product. On Etsy the most useful source is still the autocomplete in the search bar, which shows frequent searches as you type. Long, specific phrases are almost always the more realistic route, as we explain in our guide to long tail keywords.
Category and attributes: the words you don't need to write
Etsy reads the category and attributes as matches, just like tags. A Seller Handbook article says so: adding the relevant attributes helps a listing appear in searches, and the chosen category adds some terms on its own. Colour, material, occasion and style, if they exist as attributes, shouldn't be wasted in the tags.
Two practical rules. Choose the narrowest category that really describes the product, not the busiest one. And fill in every attribute available for that category: they're fields sellers often leave empty and they take two minutes.
Photos and the first sentence of the description
Photos count for search in two ways: they feed into listing quality, and they decide whether someone who sees the result clicks on it. In Etsy's surveys, 90% of buyers said photo quality was "extremely" or "very" important in deciding to buy, according to the product photography guide (Etsy doesn't give the year or market of the survey). The search visibility page lists missing, low-resolution or poor-quality images among the problems it flags.
Etsy's SEO guide also asks for alt text on every image, with colour, texture and material. It's the same logic as alt text on a website, and the rules on file size and format are the ones in our guide to image optimisation for SEO.
For the description Etsy's request is precise: the first sentence should say clearly what the item is, in the words a buyer would use. Then variations, personalisation options, sizes.
The shop's language
Language is a market question. In 2025, 74% of Etsy's gross merchandise sales came from US buyers and 26% from buyers in other countries, according to the same 2025 annual report. A UK shop already writes in the language of most buyers, but not with their spelling, and it reaches German or French buyers only through translations. Etsy suggests adding manual translations of the title, description and tags from the shop's language settings, because they perform better than automatic ones. If selling outside the UK is the goal, the principles are those of international SEO.
Customer service and conversion: the factors outside the listing
Part of the ranking doesn't depend on how you write the listing. Etsy looks at the average review rating, the message response rate and the rate of cases opened over the last three months, as the article on customer service from August 2025 explains. Replying to the first message within 48 hours is one of the stated standards. Only cases under $250 with a refund taken from the seller's account count towards the case rate.
Then there's engagement: how many people who see the listing open it, add it to their favourites and buy it. It's a conversion rate in every sense, and it explains why a listing with a perfect title but a weak photo slides down. Relevance gets you in; conversion keeps you up.
Etsy on Google UK: what actually ranks
Most guides only talk about Etsy's internal search. But Etsy pages also rank on Google, and Google brings buyers who have never opened the app. To see how much, on 10 October 2026 we checked Google UK's organic results (desktop, English, United Kingdom, via DataForSEO) for ten searches for handmade and personalised products. Volumes are average monthly searches in the UK according to Google Ads data.
| Search | Searches/month in the UK | Etsy's organic position | Etsy page that ranks |
|---|---|---|---|
| personalised gifts | 40,500 | Absent | - |
| wedding invitations | 33,100 | 5 | Category page (wedding invitations) |
| personalised mugs | 27,100 | Absent | - |
| wall art prints | 2,900 | Absent (image block only) | - |
| handmade jewellery | 1,900 | Absent | - |
| personalised wedding favours | 590 | Absent (Shopping and image blocks only) | - |
| handmade candles | 590 | Absent (Shopping block only) | - |
| handmade bags | 480 | 1 | "Market" page (collection of listings), plus two more at 7 and 9 |
| handmade earrings | 480 | 3 | "Market" page, also cited in the AI Overview |
| handmade ceramics | 390 | Absent | - |
Etsy appears in the organic top 10 for 3 searches out of 10, with an average position of 3. In two cases Google picks a "market" page, a collection Etsy generates on its own around a search; in the third, a category page. No single listing and no shop page ranks in organic results. In 4 searches out of 10 Etsy listings appear in the image block, and in 3 Etsy sellers show up in the Shopping carousels. When we ran the same test on ten Italian searches on Google.it on 1 October 2026, Etsy was in the top 10 in 7 cases, often with single listings. In the UK the space is more crowded: Not On The High Street, Folksy, The British Craft House, Amazon and makers with their own websites, and a local pack of studios and shops shows up in 6 of the 10 searches.
Two practical points. The first: on Google UK your listing is unlikely to rank on its own; what ranks is an Etsy page that contains it, and only for some searches. The title you write still matters, because it's what Google shows in image and Shopping results, cut at the first 50 to 60 characters. The second: the most commercial, crowded searches ("personalised mugs", with Printerpix, Amazon, Snappy Snaps and CEWE at the top) belong to dedicated e-commerce sites, and even on craft searches independent UK makers such as Studio Adorn, By Rebecca and Handmade by Holly rank alongside Etsy. It's the same pattern we see with e-commerce keywords: generic searches go to the big players, those with a precise attribute are open to competition, and in the UK a maker's own site can compete for them.
Bear in mind that some of the traffic from Google comes at a price. With Offsite Ads Etsy promotes listings on Google, Bing, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest and takes a 15% fee on attributed sales, which drops to 12% for shops with more than $10,000 in sales over 365 days. Above that threshold, taking part is compulsory. The fee applies to purchases made within 30 days of the click and is capped at $100 per order. Etsy publishes these amounts in US dollars.
How to tell whether your Etsy SEO is working
The first place to look is the search visibility page in Shop Manager. Etsy describes it as a set of personalised suggestions in three areas: listings, shop and customer service. It flags missing or low-resolution images, categories that are too vague, missing returns policies, a missing logo, slow replies, late dispatches and low reviews.
For keywords, sellers use external tools such as eRank, Marmalead, EverBee, Alura and Sale Samurai. They're useful for comparing searches with one another, but the volumes they show are estimates made with their own methods: two tools can give different numbers for the same word. To choose between them, the same criteria apply as for web keyword research tools.
A point of method: change one thing at a time and wait a few weeks before judging. If you rewrite the title, tags, photos and price on the same day, whatever result arrives, you won't know what caused it. And remember that the recency boost lasts hours or days: a jump in visits right after an edit isn't a result yet.
For many makers Etsy is the first channel, and then comes the moment to open a website of their own, where Google's rules apply and the customer stays yours. On Google UK, as the test above shows, that site has a real chance on specific searches. We work on this through our SEO consultancy, and the basics are in our guide to e-commerce SEO.
Frequently asked questions
It's the optimisation of titles, tags, categories, attributes, photos and customer service so that listings appear in searches made on Etsy and on Google. On Etsy the match between words and search comes first, then the ranking based on quality, conversion and customer service.
Up to 13 per listing, each with a maximum of 20 characters. Some longer UK searches go over that limit: "personalised wedding favours" has 28 characters including spaces, so it has to be split across tags or left to the title.
Etsy recommends fewer than 15 words, with colour, material and size at the start. The field allows 140 characters, but filling it with repeated keywords is exactly what the 2026 guide asks sellers to avoid. Google shows the first 50 to 60 characters.
Not in any useful way. Etsy gives new or renewed listings a small boost lasting from a few hours to a few days, and says that renewing constantly isn't an effective strategy. Each renewal costs $0.20.
Publishing or renewing a listing costs $0.20 and the listing expires after 4 months. On each sale Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee on the price and, for sellers outside the US, on shipping too, plus any Offsite Ads fees of 15% or 12%. Etsy publishes these amounts in US dollars.
Not because of the $6 rule. Priority for shipping under $6 applies only to domestic listings in the United States, not to those shipped from outside the US. Shipping terms are still part of listing quality.
Sometimes. In our test on 10 UK searches for handmade and personalised products, Etsy was in Google UK's organic top 10 in 3 cases, with an average position of 3, always with collection or category pages rather than single listings. Etsy listings also showed up in the image block in 4 searches.
What rarely gets said: the real limit is spelling
Etsy is a marketplace where three quarters of sales come from the United States and where the listing fields are measured on American English: 20-character tags, help pages with "jewelry" in the examples, title suggestions written by an American company. A UK maker plays on a field built for a market that spells its products differently, and on Google UK the gap is large: "personalised gifts" has eleven times the searches of "personalized gifts". So before arguing about tags and titles, the question to ask is who you want to sell to and in which spelling. If the answer is mostly UK buyers, British spelling in the title and one American variant in the tags is worth more than any optimisation trick doing the rounds in sellers' groups.
