An AI Overview rank tracker is software that queries Google at fixed intervals for a list of keywords and records whether an AI-generated answer appears above the results and whether your site is among the sources it cites. The word that causes the confusion is "position": Search Console gives every link in an AI Overview the position of the box, Semrush records every citation as position 1, while SE Ranking and SISTRIX show where your link sits inside the answer.
Three different numbers for the same citation.
And they often end up in the same monthly report.
When a company sends us its dashboard, these are almost always the mistakes we find:
- a "position 1" that brings no clicks, because it's a citation inside a box and not the top result;
- desktop-only tracking, when on some queries the AI Overview only appears on smartphones;
- two tools compared as if they measured the same thing, with different definitions of position.
We've already covered which tools actually read the citations in our guide to AI Overview tools. This piece is narrower: what you're buying when you buy a rank tracker that says it follows AI Overviews, and how to read its numbers.
Why should you take our word for it?
Because we use rank tracking to measure results that clients pay for. For Macropix, a Milan manufacturer of custom LED screens, share of voice on the "ledwall" (LED wall) cluster is 25.55%, ahead of Amazon at 18.08% (July 2026, Google Italy). That number comes out of a rank tracker, and it's only worth something if you know what it counts.
On 10 October 2026, for those keywords, Google Italy showed no AI Overview on smartphones. On other queries it did, and not in the same way on smartphone and computer.
In this article:
- the four ways tools count position and what that changes in the report;
- our test on 8 Italian queries, smartphone against computer, with a check on Google UK;
- six checks to make before paying for a tool;
- the price lists of 7 tools, with the unit each one charges for;
- when you don't need an AI Overview tracker.
Let's start.
Four ways of counting position in an AI Overview (and the report mixes them up)
Position inside an AI Overview isn't a standard metric: each tool works it out with its own rule, and the main rules are written down in the vendors' documentation.
Search Console gives every link the same position: the box's. Google's guide to how impressions, clicks and position are counted says it plainly: an AI Overview occupies a single position and all the links in it are assigned that position. If the box is at the top, the first source cited and the tenth both count as 1.
Semrush records every citation as position 1. The Position Tracking documentation is explicit: if your domain is cited in the AI Overview, the tool records it as a #1 ranking even when you're fifth, tenth or lower in the organic results. A toggle at the top of the report shows positions with and without AI Overviews.
SE Ranking shows where your link appears inside the answer and keeps cached copies of the SERP, according to its AI Overviews Tracker page.
SISTRIX gives you two figures to keep apart. Its AI Overviews table lists the keywords where your domain is cited, with the cited URL and the position within the box where the page is mentioned (SISTRIX changelog, 26 June 2025). But when it launched AI Overview tracking, SISTRIX said AI Overviews were not included in its Visibility Index (changelog, 2 June 2025), and we found no later entry that changes this.
| Tool | What it calls position | What happens in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | The position of the box, the same for every cited link | A cited page's average position rises without anything changing in the organic results |
| Semrush Position Tracking | 1, for every citation | A page ninth in the organic results becomes "first" |
| SE Ranking | The order of the link within the answer | The figure closest to what the user sees, but not comparable with the first two |
| SISTRIX | Position within the box, in a separate AI Overviews table | Two numbers to keep apart: the position in the box and a Visibility Index that, at launch, left AI Overviews out |
None of these rules is wrong. The mistake is adding them up in the same chart.
So which one goes in the report? The one you put next to clicks. If average position goes up and clicks stay flat, it's almost always a citation counted as first place. What a position measures, and how to read it, is covered in our guide to keyword rankings.
The test: 8 Italian queries, smartphone against computer (10 October 2026)
On 8 Italian queries run at the same time, the AI Overview appeared on 7 on smartphone and on 6 on computer. The same rank tracker, set to a single device, would have handed in two different pictures of the same market.
Method: snapshot taken on 10 October 2026 between 7:12 and 7:13 Italian time, Google Italy, Italian language, one scan per device through DataForSEO's SERP API. The queries come from sectors we work in: energy, engineering, ecommerce, business software, construction. The queries stay in Italian, with an English translation in brackets.
| Query | AI Overview on smartphone | AI Overview on computer | Sources cited | Top organic result, smartphone | Top organic result, computer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| come funziona un impianto fotovoltaico (how a solar PV system works) | Yes | Yes | 6, identical | tonello-energie.com | enel.it (cited) |
| quanto costa un impianto fotovoltaico da 6 kw (how much a 6 kW solar system costs) | Yes, generated on request | No | not readable | veneco.it | inverteronline.it |
| differenza tra fresatura e tornitura (difference between milling and turning) | Yes | Yes | 10, identical | reddit.com | emmegispa.eu |
| come funziona una pompa di calore (how a heat pump works) | Yes | Yes | 9, identical | leroymerlin.it | abbassalebollette.it |
| come aprire un ecommerce (how to start an online shop) | Yes | Yes | 10, identical | websitex5.com | websitex5.com |
| cos'è un gestionale cloud (what cloud business software is) | Yes, generated on request | Yes, generated on request | not readable | esaedro.com | esaedro.com |
| ogni quanto fare la manutenzione della caldaia (how often to service a boiler) | Yes | Yes | 5, identical | buderus.com | buderus.com |
| pannelli sandwich prezzi (insulated panel prices) | No | No | none | eurolegnamicaramia.it | intecoamianto.com |
AI Overviews "generated on request" are the ones Google builds at the moment of the search: a tool that doesn't make a second call sees the container but not the sources. We explained the mechanism in our guide to AI Overview tools. Three things matter here.
Whether the box appears depends on the device. On "quanto costa un impianto fotovoltaico da 6 kw" the AI Overview was there on smartphone but not on computer, where the top result was an inverteronline.it product page selling a kit at 5,900 euros. A desktop-only tracker would tell you AI has nothing to do with that query.
The sources cited, on the other hand, were identical. Across the 5 AI Overviews readable on both devices, the 40 citations matched one for one. For citations, one device is enough. For presence and organic ranking you need two: the top organic result changed between smartphone and computer on 5 queries out of 8.
The top organic result was among the sources in 1 case out of 10. Across the 10 query and device pairs with a readable AI Overview, it happened once: enel.it, on computer, for "come funziona un impianto fotovoltaico". Reddit was first on smartphone for "differenza tra fresatura e tornitura", Leroy Merlin for "come funziona una pompa di calore", Buderus for "ogni quanto fare la manutenzione della caldaia": none of the three was cited.
We ran a smaller check on Google UK the same day, in English, on three queries from the same sectors: "how do solar panels work", "how much does a 4kw solar system cost" and "insulated roof panels prices". The AI Overview appeared on all three, on both devices; on the cost query it was generated on request, so its sources couldn't be read. On the other two, the 15 citations matched between smartphone and computer, while the top organic result changed on both (infinity-energy.co.uk on smartphone and relionbattery.com on computer for the first; steelroofsheets.co.uk and southernsheeting.co.uk for the third). None of those four top results was cited. Same pattern as Italy: citations stable across devices, organic rankings not. The samples are small and don't measure how widespread AI Overviews are in Italy or the UK. They measure something more useful to anyone about to buy software: with one device and one snapshot, the figure that ends up in the report depends on how the tool is set up, not only on Google.
Your dashboard says position 1 and the clicks aren't coming?
In our test the top organic result was among the AI Overview's sources in 1 case out of 10. Let's check together which keywords in your sector Google answers by itself, on which device, and who it cites instead of you.
Book a strategy consultationSix checks before paying for an AI Overview rank tracker (the sixth is about the invoice)
Before looking at prices, check six features. They decide whether the figure that reaches your report can be used.
1. Smartphone and computer as separate snapshots
In both tests what changed was presence and the top organic result, not the sources. If the tool charges for the second device, take it anyway for your commercial keywords.
2. Location at least by region
AI Overviews change by country and, for queries with local intent, by city. ProRankTracker says it tracks down to postcode, city and neighbourhood; SE Ranking's free checker lets you enter a city. If you sell within a 20-mile radius, the real contest is still the local pack, which we cover in our guide to local SEO.
3. The definition of position, in writing
Ask support how the tool counts position when you're cited. If the answer is "1", you already know that number has to be read next to clicks and never on its own.
4. Daily updates and history
Ahrefs followed more than 43,000 keywords with at least 16 recorded AI Overviews each and measured an average persistence of 2.15 days: between two snapshots the content changes 70% of the time, and only 54.5% of the cited URLs carry over from one answer to the next (study by Louise Linehan and Xibeijia Guan, November 2025, market not stated). With weekly updates you miss most of the changes.
5. A copy of the SERP for every snapshot
It's the only way to check an anomaly after the fact. SE Ranking keeps one; many tools only show the figure they've already extracted, and when the chart drops you can't tell whether Google changed or the scan failed.
6. The unit you pay for
Traditional rank trackers charge per keyword; platforms built for AI visibility charge per prompt and per check. Ahrefs, for example, counts 1 check per prompt, per platform, per location and per update.
Here's the sum for a realistic case: 50 prompts on 2 platforms (AI Overviews and AI Mode) updated every day make 3,000 checks a month. Ahrefs' Basic custom prompts package costs $50 a month (about £37.80 at the Bank of England rate of 8 October 2026, $1.3226 to the pound, before VAT) and includes 2,500 checks: the extra 500, at $0.02 each, add $10 (about £7.56). Not much, but only if you know it beforehand (Ahrefs pricing, 10 October 2026). On Keyword.com an AI Overview check costs 0.25 credits per prompt per update, according to the price list calculator.
The tools, grouped by how they count (price lists checked on 10 October 2026)
Seven tools with an AI Overview module: some are rank trackers that have added generated answers, others were built for AI visibility and work by prompt. Entry prices are the ones on the official pages on 10 October 2026, before VAT. Where a vendor publishes dollars, the pounds in brackets use the Bank of England rate for 8 October 2026 ($1.3226 to the pound).
| Tool | Unit | AI engines | Position in the AI Overview | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking | Keywords and prompts | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity with the AI Search add-on | Order of the link in the answer, with a cached copy of the SERP | Core $129/month (about £97.54); AI Search add-on $89/month (£67.29), $71.20 on annual billing |
| Semrush | Keywords in Position Tracking, prompts in the AI Visibility Toolkit | AI Overviews in Position Tracking; AI Mode and ChatGPT in the Toolkit | 1 for every citation | AI Visibility Toolkit $99/month per domain (about £74.85), 25 prompts |
| Keyword.com | Keywords plus AI credits | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and others | Not stated on the price list | Google + AI plan from $26/month on annual billing (about £19.66) |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Prompts and checks | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot | Not a keyword tracker: it measures mentions and citations | Brand Radar AI from $199/month (about £150.46); custom prompts from $50/month (£37.80) |
| ProRankTracker | Prompts | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot | Mentions and links, updated daily | $99/month with 500 prompts (about £74.85, as stated by the vendor) |
| Otterly.AI | Prompts | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot; AI Mode for $9/month extra | Not applicable | Lite $29/month (about £21.93), 15 prompts, daily |
| SISTRIX | Keywords | AI Overviews in the keyword tables; prompt tracking for AI chatbots | Position within the box, in a separate table | Start €119/month plus tax (published in euros on sistrix.com) |
The rule we use on projects is less sophisticated than it looks.
If the company already has Semrush, SE Ranking or SISTRIX, switch on the suite's module and learn how it reads position, rather than buying a second tool that counts it another way.
If you have hundreds of keywords, the pricing unit matters more than the number of engines. A prompt-based tool is cheap with 15 questions and expensive with 500.
If the goal is ChatGPT or Perplexity, you're measuring something else: appearing in a ChatGPT answer and in an AI Overview depend on different signals. The method is in our guide to AI visibility, and the wider comparison in the one on the best AI visibility tools. AI Mode has a SERP of its own, covered in our guide to Google AI Mode.
When you don't need an AI Overview tracker (and why you should check first)
On commercial category keywords the AI Overview often doesn't appear on Google Italy, and there classic rank tracking is still the right tool. On Google UK the picture we found was different, so check your own keywords before deciding.
On 10 October 2026 we checked two keywords from the Macropix case on Google Italy, on smartphone: "ledwall" (LED wall), 4,400 searches a month in Italy, and "monitor pubblicitario" (advertising monitor). No AI Overview on either. The same for "pannelli sandwich prezzi", on smartphone and computer. On Google UK, the same day, "led wall" (1,000 searches a month, Google Ads average through DataForSEO) and "insulated roof panels prices" both had an AI Overview on smartphone.
On "ledwall" in Italy the page opened with four local pack listings and a "Related websites" block with nine sites, Macropix included. The first organic result, Amazon, sat at absolute position 6. On "monitor pubblicitario" the first element was a carousel of products for sale. On "led wall" in the UK, the AI Overview came first, then an online shop, then images, product listings and People Also Ask, and the local pack only at absolute position 7.
First or sixth? It depends on the tracker. One that only counts organic results says first; one that counts every element on the page says sixth. On today's SERP the second reading is the one closer to what the searcher sees.
For a manufacturer, the metric that holds up is another one: share of voice on the cluster, meaning how much of the total visibility the domain takes. It's the number we use to tell the Macropix story in our guide to SEO for manufacturing, and it's calculated with a traditional rank tracker. How to build it is explained in our guide to share of voice. If your commercial keywords trigger AI Overviews, as "led wall" does in the UK, add the citations as a separate column rather than folding them into the position.
Search Console as a cross-check (no cost, with one clear limit)
Search Console is the check that costs nothing: according to Google's documentation on AI features, impressions and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode go into the Performance report, Web search type, together with the rest of your traffic. In June 2026 Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports, rolled out gradually and, at launch, limited to page impressions.
The limit is position. With every link in an AI Overview given the same position, a page cited in a box at the top raises its average position without gaining anything in the organic results. The signal to look for is still in the clicks: stable or rising position, falling clicks.
How much the box weighs on clicks was measured by Pew Research Center on 68,879 searches by 900 US adults in March 2025: a traditional result was clicked on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. It's a US figure and works as an order of magnitude. On your own data you measure it as we explain in the impact of AI Overviews on SEO, and to keep the four positions apart in the same report there's our guide to the SEO dashboard.
Frequently asked questions about AI Overview rank trackers
No. Search Console gives every link in an AI Overview the position of the box, so it doesn't tell the first source cited from the tenth. Impressions and clicks go into the Performance report, Web search type, together with the rest of your traffic.
Because Semrush records every citation in an AI Overview as first place, whatever your organic position. The report has a toggle to show positions without AI Overviews: that's the one to look at to know where you stand in the classic results.
It depends: almost all of them now flag whether the box is there, but not all of them read the sources cited. When Google generates the answer at the moment of the search, reading it takes a second call, and tools that don't make it leave the citations column empty.
Yes. In our test of 10 October 2026 on 8 Italian queries the AI Overview appeared on 7 on smartphone and on 6 on computer, and the top organic result changed on 5 queries out of 8. The sources cited, on the other hand, matched. A smaller check on Google UK the same day showed the same pattern.
It depends on the value of the keyword, but daily is the useful minimum. In Ahrefs' study of more than 43,000 keywords an answer stays the same for 2.15 days on average, and the content changes 70% of the time between two snapshots.
Yes, but without history. Semrush's AI Overviews Visibility Checker is free to use and SE Ranking's checker allows 5 checks a day. They give you a snapshot, not a way to follow a keyword over time.
A position that lasts 2.15 days (in short)
In short:
Four tools, four ways of counting the same citation.
The device changes whether the box appears, not the sources.
The top organic result was cited in 1 case out of 10.
No AI Overview for "ledwall" on Google Italy; one for "led wall" on Google UK.
You pay per keyword or per check: do the sums first.
Something people in the industry rarely say: an AI Overview rank tracker measures an event, not a position. With an answer that stays the same for a little over two days on average, the question to ask the vendor isn't how many engines it covers, but how many times a day it queries each keyword, from which device and with what rule it counts the citation. A vendor who can't answer those three questions is selling a chart, not data.
If you want to know which queries in your sector Google is already answering by itself, and who it cites, it's the first check we run in our SEO for AI search engines projects. For work on classic rankings, the kind that put Macropix ahead of Amazon, there's our SEO consultancy.
