AI citations and brand mentions: how to get named by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

Author: Matteo Pellegrini

In the answers given by AI assistants, a brand can show up in two ways. A citation is a link to a page used as a source, usually a number or a label next to the text. A mention is the brand name written in the answer, with or without a link. The two often go together, but not always: a model can name a company while citing another site's league table as its source.

The distinction matters because you earn them in different ways. Citations depend mainly on the pages of your own site. Mentions depend on what the web says about you, including outside your site.

The most widely cited study is by Ahrefs, from May 2025, covering 75,000 brands. It measured how closely various factors correlate with brands appearing in Google's AI Overviews:

FactorCorrelation with mentions in AI Overviews
Brand mentions on the web0.664
Anchor text containing the brand name0.527
Brand search volume0.392
Domain Rating0.326
Number of backlinks0.218

The top 25% of brands by web mentions average 169 mentions in AI Overviews. The bottom half get between 0 and 3.

It's a correlation, not proof that mentions cause visibility. But it tells you where to look: a brand that gets talked about a lot gets named a lot, even with few links. For anyone who has spent years on link building it's a change of perspective: the link still counts, the written name counts for more.

Where the models get their sources

Every engine has its favourite sources, and they change over time.

Profound analysed 680 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025:

  • ChatGPT cited Wikipedia most (7.8%), followed by Reddit (1.8%) and Forbes (1.1%);
  • AI Overviews cited Reddit (2.2%), YouTube (1.9%) and Quora (1.5%);
  • Perplexity cited Reddit (6.6%) and YouTube (2.0%).

Semrush later saw the picture shift: between July and October 2025 the share of ChatGPT answers citing Reddit fell from about 60% to about 10%, and the share citing Wikipedia from about 55% to under 20%. In AI Mode the most cited domain was LinkedIn, at around 15%.

For a UK B2B company these percentages matter less than the ones for its own sector. On 10 October 2026 we asked four engines, through the DataForSEO APIs, "which SEO agency should a manufacturing company in the Midlands choose?":

  • ChatGPT cited 6 pages: five belonging to agencies, including a case study by Spotlight Lane whose headline figure (£1m+ in new business for a Midlands manufacturer) it repeated, plus the manufacturing SEO league table published by Reboot. It put Impression at the top of its list without citing a single Impression page: a mention with no citation, built entirely on Reboot's table;
  • Claude relied mostly on third-party rankings: 5 of its 7 sources were lists such as Reboot's, ITProfiles, Reverbico and the Semrush agency directory;
  • Perplexity cited 10 URLs, a mix of agency pages and roundups such as TrafficTail's "15 best SEO companies in Birmingham";
  • Gemini mainly used the agencies' own service pages (4 of 6 domains), plus the GoodFirms and Semrush directories.

Reboot's list was cited by three engines out of four, and Omnisity, a West Midlands agency with a page devoted to SEO for manufacturers, by three out of four as well. When we ran the same test in Italian on 27 September 2026, for a manufacturer in Lombardy, ChatGPT cited our own article on SEO for manufacturing, published five weeks earlier.

In another Italian test, on the question "best outdoor LED walls for corporate events", Gemini cited two pages from Macropix, an Italian client we work with on SEO and Google Ads, and named it among the leading manufacturers alongside two other brands. The mention came from pages on its site devoted to exactly that application.

Mentions are unstable

The answers change every time you ask, and so do the brands they name. AirOps analysed 45,000 citations: only 30% of brands stay visible from one answer to the next for the same question. Brands that are both cited and mentioned are 40% more likely to reappear. About 57% of the brands that drop out come back in a later answer.

The January 2026 study by SparkToro and Gumshoe points the same way: less than a one-in-a-hundred chance that two answers contain the same list of brands.

The practical consequence: a single answer in which you appear, or don't, means nothing. You need to measure across many repetitions, as we explain in AI visibility.

How to earn citations

You earn citations with pages a model finds useful to show as a source.

  1. Pages that answer one precise question, with the answer in the first few lines. Models extract passages, not whole pages.
  2. Verifiable numbers. The Princeton paper on GEO found that adding statistics and quotations from sources increases visibility in generated answers by up to 40%.
  3. Case studies with data. In our UK test every page ChatGPT cited was either a service page written specifically for manufacturers or a case study with figures.
  4. Pages indexed where the engine searches. Google for AI Overviews and Gemini, Bing for Copilot. And no robots.txt block on OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. The details are in the article on AI crawlers.
  5. Up-to-date content. One of the most frequent modifiers in ChatGPT's searches is the current year: a page stuck in 2023 loses to one from 2026.

How to earn mentions

This is where the work moves off your site.

  • Sector league tables and comparisons. If articles along the lines of "the best X in the UK" turn up in the answers for your sector, those are the sites to get included on. In our UK test three engines out of four cited the same manufacturing SEO league table.
  • Directories and professional listings. Trade portals, trade association member directories, and profiles on platforms such as Clutch or GoodFirms for services. In our test Gemini and Claude both cited the Semrush agency directory, and Gemini cited GoodFirms too.
  • Trade press and interviews. One article in a magazine that covers your industry is worth more than ten posts on your own blog.
  • Verified reviews, on Google and on the platforms your sector uses.
  • Reddit and forums, where they make sense for your audience. It has to be a genuine presence: promotional comments get removed and don't help.
  • YouTube. According to a 2026 Ahrefs update, mentions on YouTube are the signal most closely correlated with visibility in AI answers.
  • A consistent name. The same company name everywhere, linked with sameAs structured data. It helps the engines understand that the mentions refer to the same company. We explain this in Knowledge Graph.

How to monitor them

For citations: the AI report in Search Console for Google, and a sample of repeated questions for the other engines. For mentions: the same sample, counting competitors too.

The most useful view is the sources. If the same five sites keep turning up in your sector's answers, the digital PR plan writes itself: those are the sites to get named on. The tools for doing it, from the cheapest to enterprise level, are in our guide to the best AI visibility tools.

What not to do

  • Buying mentions in bulk on low-quality sites. Models tend to avoid weak sources: ChatGPT's shopping research feature, for example, says it avoids low-quality sites.
  • Writing self-congratulatory content. A "why we're the best" page doesn't get cited as a source.
  • Trusting a single answer. A mention today can vanish tomorrow, and the other way round.

FAQs

What is the difference between a citation and a mention in AI answers?

A citation is a link to a page used as a source for the answer. A mention is the brand name written in the text of the answer. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, for example when the model uses a league table written by someone else as its source.

Do brand mentions matter more than backlinks for AI?

According to an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, brand mentions on the web have a correlation of 0.664 with appearing in AI Overviews, against 0.218 for the number of backlinks. It's a correlation, not proof of cause, but it suggests that the brand name written on other sites carries a lot of weight.

Which sites do ChatGPT and Perplexity take their sources from?

It varies by engine and over time. In 2024-2025 ChatGPT cited Wikipedia heavily, while Perplexity and AI Overviews leaned on Reddit and YouTube. In our test on a UK B2B question, the engines cited sector league tables, agency directories and service pages or case studies written for that specific sector.

How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?

It depends on indexing and competition. In our own case, an article on SEO for manufacturing was cited by ChatGPT five weeks after publication, in answer to a question, asked in Italian, about which agency to choose.
