A type of SEO is an area of optimisation with its own rules and signals: it changes what you work on, not the goal, which is still getting the site found in search engines. The lists going around count four, five, sometimes fourteen. The number matters little. What matters is that three families hold everything up, some types only apply to certain kinds of site, and since 2024 a new category has appeared that most of these lists still barely mention: SEO for AI-driven search.
Below is the map as it stands in 2026: which types exist, which really matter in your case and where one ends and the next begins. With source data and the numbers from a real project, not a list of definitions.
The three families that hold everything up
Any long list of "types of SEO" comes down, at its base, to three areas. They are not optional and they do not exclude each other: a site that sells needs all three together.
On-page SEO
This is the work inside the page: content, title, heading structure, internal links, the search intent it covers. It starts from a question someone types and a page built to answer it better than the others. This is also where you choose which words to target, which is a craft of its own: keyword research decides what the page tries to rank for before it is even written. Most of the ranking battle is fought in this area, and it is the first one to fix. Practical detail in the guide to on-page SEO.
Off-page SEO
This is everything that builds authority from outside: links from other sites, brand citations, mentions. Google uses these signals to judge whether a site deserves trust on a subject. It is worth saying because it is the most misunderstood part: in off-page SEO what counts is not how many links you have but where they come from. One link from an authoritative site in your sector weighs more than a hundred from generic directories.
Technical SEO
This is the part that lets Google read the site: speed, indexing, URL structure, structured data, the mobile version. It does not bring traffic on its own, but when it is broken it blocks everything else. A slow or badly indexed site does not rank however good the content is. It is the floor the other two areas stand on, explained in the guide to technical SEO.
These three blocks are the real "areas of SEO". Everything else on the list is not a fourth or fifth type on an equal footing: they are applications of these three to a specific channel, format or kind of search.
The types that depend on your kind of site
Here the type depends on what you do. Not all of them apply to everyone: a dentist does not need e-commerce SEO, an online shop does not live on local search. I list them with the signal that tells you whether they concern you.
Local SEO
It is for businesses that sell within an area: practices, shops, tradespeople, services with a catchment radius. The playing field is the Google Business Profile, the map pack and reviews. On reviews there is one figure worth keeping: in BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2024, 75% of consumers say they always or regularly read reviews before choosing a local business, and Google remains the most used review platform, at 81% (sample of 1,141 US consumers). How the local pack works is covered in the guide to local SEO.
E-commerce SEO
It concerns anyone selling products online, who has a problem other sites do not: hundreds or thousands of product and category pages, content that is often duplicated, filters that generate endless URLs. In the UK the channel is anything but marginal: according to the Office for National Statistics, online sales accounted for 28.8% of all retail sales in Great Britain in August 2026 (retail sales bulletin, 18 September 2026). SEO here is done on category pages, product pages and catalogue architecture, as in the guide to e-commerce SEO.
Video SEO and YouTube SEO
Two different things that often get confused. Video SEO optimises a video so that it appears in Google's results, usually through structured data and a transcript. YouTube SEO works inside a separate search engine with its own rules: title, description, chapters, retention. It concerns you if you produce video, not if you only publish text.
International SEO and B2B SEO
International SEO comes into play when the same site serves several languages or countries, and it brings specific technical problems such as hreflang tags. B2B SEO is not a different technical area: it is a way of applying on-page work and content to long buying cycles, where the searcher is a buyer rather than a consumer. I name them together because they are the two types most often sold as "specialist" when they are really the three base families applied to a context.
SEO for AI search: the category almost everyone is missing
This is the part page one of Google UK for "types of seo" still does not cover. Judging by their snippets, the articles ranking today list on-page, off-page, technical and local, some add e-commerce, mobile or news, and they stop there. The AI Overview at the top of that same SERP summarises them the same way, without a word on SEO for AI answers (Google UK, 26 September 2026). Yet the way people search has changed, and with it the scope of SEO.
The starting point is how strong the habit of not clicking already is. In the 2024 zero-click study by SparkToro on Datos data, 59.7% of Google searches in Europe end without any click to an external site: for every 1,000 searches, only 374 clicks reach the open web (desktop and mobile, European panel, period up to May 2024). AI Overviews speed this up. Ahrefs' analysis of 300,000 keywords measured a 34.5% drop in click-through rate for position one when an AI Overview appears (desktop, US market, March 2024 compared with March 2025). There is no public UK dataset of the same scale, but AI Overviews already appear on the SERP for many informational queries, "types of seo" included.
Within this picture two new types have formed, often used as synonyms but distinct.
- AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation: optimising for direct answers, the ones in featured snippets and in assistants that return a block of text instead of a list of links.
- GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation: getting cited in the answers generated by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Here the metric is not position, it is whether your site is named as a source.
This is not a topic for early adopters. According to the Office for National Statistics, self-reported use of AI among UK businesses with ten or more employees rose from around 12% in late 2023 to around 35% in June 2026, and reaches 49% among businesses with 250 or more employees. People looking for suppliers and B2B information use these tools, and anyone who does not appear among the cited sources disappears from a growing share of searches. Which signals matter when an AI writes the answer is the subject of the guide to AI Overview ranking factors; the practical side, for a company that wants to appear in ChatGPT's answers, is in this dedicated guide.
White hat and black hat: not types, but methods
Most lists slip "white hat SEO" and "black hat SEO" in among the types, and the AI Overview on Google UK does the same. They are not types: they are the way you do all the others. White hat SEO follows Google's guidelines and aims for results that last. Black hat bends the rules for a quick gain, with the risk of a penalty that wipes out the work. The distinction is real and worth knowing, but it belongs on a different axis from the types.
Which type your site needs
The right question is not "how many types are there" but "which ones apply to me". This table matches each type with the signal that tells you whether you need to deal with it.
| Type | What it optimises | It concerns you if... |
|---|---|---|
| On-page SEO | Content, intent, page structure | Always. It is the base for every site. |
| Off-page SEO | Links and external authority | You compete on contested keywords, not just niche ones. |
| Technical SEO | Speed, indexing, structured data | Always, especially if the site is large or slow. |
| Local SEO | Google Business Profile, maps, reviews | You sell within an area or customers come to your premises. |
| E-commerce SEO | Categories, product pages, catalogue | You sell products online. |
| Video and YouTube SEO | Video in the results and inside YouTube | You produce video content. |
| International SEO | Multiple languages and countries, hreflang | The same site serves different markets. |
| AEO and GEO | Direct answers and citations in AI | Your queries show AI Overviews or your customers use ChatGPT and Perplexity. |
The rule of thumb: always start from the three base families, add the types tied to your kind of site, and weigh AEO and GEO according to how far your searches are already taken over by AI answers.
The real mistake: treating them as separate departments
The most common problem is not ignoring a type, it is keeping them in silos. A page-one result does not come from a single area: it comes from the three base families working together on the same site, for years.
A concrete case shows it well. Macropix, a Milan manufacturer of custom LED screens, went from position 88 to position 2 on Google Italy for "monitor pubblicitario" (advertising display). Position 88 means page nine, i.e. zero traffic. On the category keyword "ledwall", with 4,400 searches a month in Italy, it went from absent to first, and in July 2026 it held a 25.55% share of voice on the ledwall cluster, ahead of Amazon. That did not happen by working on a single type of SEO: it is the sum of content and structure (on-page), authority built over time (off-page) and a site Google reads without stumbling (technical), over a span of years. The method and full numbers are in the Macropix case study and in the guide to SEO for manufacturing.

Frequently asked questions
There is no fixed number: lists count anywhere from four to fourteen. The real structure is simpler. There are three base families, on-page, off-page and technical, and every other item is an application to a channel or kind of search: local, e-commerce, video, international, AEO and GEO.
On-page SEO is the work inside your pages: content, titles, structure, the search intent they cover. Off-page SEO is everything that happens outside the site and raises its authority, above all links from other sites and brand mentions. The first you control directly; the second you earn.
They are the two types that arrived with AI search. AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, optimises for direct answers such as featured snippets. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, aims to get the site cited as a source in answers generated by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. They matter when your queries already show AI answers.
With the three base families, on-page and technical first, off-page after. A site with the right content that Google cannot read does not rank, and neither does the reverse. Only once the foundations are solid does it make sense to add the types tied to your kind of site and weigh up AEO and GEO.
