On "divorce lawyer london" the bids for the top of the page reach £69.54 per click. Not per client: per single click, on a search made 260 times a month (DataForSEO, Google Ads UK, September 2026; CPC converted from USD at £1 = $1.3242).
Legal services are one of the few sectors where Google's first page still belongs to the firms and not to the aggregators. On "divorce solicitor london" eight of the nine organic results on the first page are law firms' own sites. A firm that works well on its own website can gain ground, which in healthcare or restaurants is no longer possible.
Below: what each area of law is worth, what the SRA rules allow, and why the general legal blog is the worst route.
Each area of law has a different price
Cost per click is the quickest way to see what a matter is worth to the people already buying it.
| Search | Monthly volume | Average CPC | Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| free legal advice | 6,600 | £4.15 | 8,100 in September 2025 |
| solicitors london | 2,900 | £10.19 | 4,400 in September 2025 |
| employment lawyer london | 1,600 | £14.05 | 2,900 in September 2025 |
| how much does a solicitor cost | 880 | £2.70 | 1,000 in March 2026 |
| criminal solicitor london | 590 | £23.69 | 880 in September 2025 |
| online solicitor | 590 | £8.17 | 880 in September 2025 |
| divorce solicitor london | 480 | £35.90 | 1,900 in September 2025 |
| family solicitor london | 480 | £10.66 | 1,600 in September 2025 |
Divorce costs three and a half times as much as "solicitors london" and half as much again as criminal work. The generic search for a firm is cheaper because it is vaguer: the person typing it doesn't yet know what they need.
Hence the first decision, which concerns the structure of the site before any advertising: one page per practice area, in the client's language and not the lawyer's. People search for "divorce solicitor", not "matrimonial finance".
Seasonality is readable too: September and March are the months in which almost every area peaks, and July and August the lowest. "Divorce solicitor london" drops to 110 searches in July. People start proceedings when they are back from the summer, not before it.
What the SRA rules allow
Solicitors in England and Wales can advertise. The SRA Code of Conduct for Solicitors requires that any publicity about the practice is accurate and not misleading, including on charges (paragraph 8.8), and bans unsolicited approaches to members of the public to advertise legal services, other than to current or former clients (paragraph 8.9). Promises of outcome and claims you can't back up fall foul of the first rule; cold approaches fall foul of the second.
What remains allowed already covers almost everything you need: the areas you handle, real qualifications and accreditations, how a matter runs, how long it takes, what the likely costs are. The SRA Transparency Rules go further and require firms to publish price information for some services, such as residential conveyancing, probate and unfair dismissal claims, along with the complaints procedure and the SRA digital badge. This isn't a limit that reduces visibility: it is a description of what clients actually look for.
The searches around "divorce solicitor london" confirm it: "How much does a solicitor cost for divorce in the UK?" is among the questions Google shows, and four of the eight related searches are about cost or free advice: "divorce solicitors london free consultation", "divorce lawyer london cost", "divorce lawyer uk cost", "divorce solicitors free advice".
Why the general legal blog doesn't pay
Many firms try the route of general explainer content, on the model of the big legal information sites. The numbers of those sites explain why it doesn't work at the scale of a firm.
In the UK, that space is held by Citizens Advice, which ranks for 92,530 keywords, 4,574 of them in first position, with an estimated 4.5 million visits a month: a charity with decades of trust and links that no firm will match. Where the space is held by a commercial portal instead, the picture is no better. In Italy, the largest consumer law portal, La Legge per Tutti, ranks for 91,209 keywords but holds only 427 first positions; most of its archive sits between positions 41 and 50, and 29,551 of its keywords are falling against 11,976 rising.
If a portal with ninety thousand pages holds 0.5% of first positions and is losing ground, a firm publishing two articles a month on the same type of content gets nowhere. General explainer content is the territory where AI Overviews are eating clicks fastest.
What works instead is content a portal can't write: how a financial remedy application runs at your local family court, what the real timescales are, what to bring to the first meeting, what it costs. It is local, practical information, and it is exactly what the SRA rules allow.

The local pack matters here too
On "divorce solicitor london" the local pack shows three listings: Stowe Family Law's London office, RVS Solicitors, and Stowe Family Law's Soho office. One firm holds two of the three places because each office has its own Google Business Profile.
Reviews carry weight in the organic results as well. Stowe's London page shows 4.7 stars from 2,995 reviews directly in the snippet, and Adam Bernard's description claims a 4.7 rating from more than 1,000 clients. In central London divorce work the bar is already high; in a smaller town or a narrower area of law, a few dozen reviews may be enough to enter the pack, and it is worth checking before assuming otherwise.
Two of the domains on the first page carry a person's name (Helen Pidgeon Solicitors, Adam Bernard). When clients know a firm through an individual, the individual's name, not just the firm's, needs to be covered like a keyword.
Frequently asked questions
Can a solicitor advertise on Google?
Yes, within the SRA Code of Conduct: publicity must be accurate and not misleading, including on fees, and you can't make unsolicited approaches to members of the public. The ad text needs to be written with the same care as the landing page.
Is it worth publishing costs?
The searches say yes: half the related searches on this results page are about cost or free advice, and for some services the SRA Transparency Rules make price information compulsory anyway. An indicative range, with the items that make it up, is information rather than promotion, and it filters out off-target enquiries before they reach reception.
A firm website or a personal one?
It depends on what clients search for. On the first page we looked at, large firms and boutique practices sit side by side, and several domains are personal names. If the firm is known through a person, use that person's name: it is what people type.
Do legal directories help?
Less than in other sectors. The only directory on the first page for "divorce solicitor london" is Legal 500, third among the organic results, and it is a ranking guide rather than a source of everyday enquiries. It is worth being listed for consistency of your details, not as a main acquisition channel.
What budget do you need to start?
With the CPCs in this sector, ads are judged on the value of the matter: at £35.90 a click and one conversion in fifty, an enquiry costs almost £1,800, which only makes sense for matters worth several thousand pounds. For lower-value areas, start with the Google Business Profile and one page per practice area.
Where to start
List the areas of law that actually bring revenue into the firm and check whether each one has its own page on the site, written in the words the client uses. In most of the firms we look at there is a single "practice areas" page with a bullet list: that page ranks for nothing. If you want an opinion on which areas to cover in your town, get in touch.
