YouTube thumbnails are the preview images that represent a video in search, on the home page and in suggested videos. YouTube Help now recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as JPG or PNG, up to 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. On 13 October 2026, across 40 videos in the top ten results for 4 Italian industry searches, 9 of 19 business videos still used a frame picked automatically by YouTube, against 1 of 21 from creators and publishers.
If you searched "youtube thumbnail size", you probably read a different number: 1280 x 720.
Canva, TechSmith, Snappa, Piktochart and Google's own AI Overview all say so. It was the right size a few years ago. Today it is a ninth of the pixels YouTube recommends.
Does that matter in practice?
Not much for sharpness. The real problem is elsewhere: page one is almost entirely thumbnail makers and resizers (Canva, Adobe Express, LightX, IMResizer) and creator advice about shocked faces and yellow text. Nobody talks about what we see on business channels.
Which is this:
- the thumbnail is the frame YouTube chose, often a machine caught mid-movement;
- the logo sits large in the middle, with no hint of what the video solves;
- nobody has ever tried a second version, even though YouTube Studio does it for free.
Two of the four searches in our test sit in our clients' markets. Macropix makes LED walls: the single keyword "ledwall" earned 67,560 Google impressions in twelve months, and Google Ads has brought 2,906 quote requests since 2018. Valore Solare installs solar PV and batteries: 1,506 enquiries at €70.78 each.
On Google those numbers depend partly on how clear the ad is before the click. On YouTube, the thumbnail does that job.
In this guide (the wider picture is in our YouTube SEO guide) you will find:
- the official sizes for thumbnails, Shorts, banners, profile pictures and watermarks in one table;
- why 9 pages out of 10 still say 1280 x 720;
- our test on 40 videos from 4 industry searches;
- five rules for a business video thumbnail;
- how YouTube's A/B test works, and why it does not reward clicks.
Let's start.
YouTube thumbnail size: what YouTube Help says (3840 x 2160, not 1280 x 720)
The recommended YouTube thumbnail size is 3840 x 2160 pixels, 4K at 16:9. The minimum is 640 pixels wide. These are the values on the Add custom video thumbnails page of YouTube Help, checked on 13 October 2026.
Below are all the sizes a business channel needs, each with its official source.
| Asset | Recommended size | Minimum or limit | Max file size | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Video thumbnail | 3840 x 2160 px (16:9) | 640 px wide | 2 MB on mobile, 50 MB on desktop | YouTube Help |
| Shorts thumbnail | 2160 x 3840 px (9:16) | 640 px tall | 50 MB on desktop | YouTube Help |
| Podcast thumbnail | 1:1 | n/a | 10 MB on mobile, 50 MB on desktop | YouTube Help |
| Channel banner | 2560 x 1440 px | 2048 x 1152 px; safe area 1235 x 338 px | 6 MB | YouTube Help |
| Profile picture | renders at 98 x 98 px | JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG, no animated GIFs | 15 MB | YouTube Help |
| Video watermark | square | 150 x 150 px | 1 MB | YouTube Help |
Three details most guides leave out:
- you need a verified account, otherwise you can only pick from the automatic suggestions;
- there is a daily thumbnail limit, which varies by country and channel history;
- Shorts custom thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, according to the English help page. The Italian version, on the same day, still said they were not available.
So will a 1280 x 720 image be rejected?
No. It is accepted. But in YouTube's A/B test thumbnails below 720p are resized to 854 x 480, as the A/B test titles and thumbnails page says. On a TV screen the difference shows.
The practical fix: design at 3840 x 2160 and export a JPG under 2 MB, so you can upload it from a phone too.
Why almost everyone still says 1280 x 720 (9 pages in 10, plus the AI Overviews)
On 13 October 2026 we pulled Google's first page with DataForSEO for three searches: "dimensioni miniatura youtube" and "miniatura youtube" in Italy, and "youtube thumbnail size" in the United States. We counted the non-Google pages that give a recommended size.
The result: of 10 pages, 9 recommend 1280 x 720. Only Vizua gives 3840 x 2160. The nine include vidIQ and Kapwing, both updated in 2026, and Filmora, updated on 12 October 2026.
We repeated the check on the UK results for "youtube thumbnail size" (6,600 searches a month in the UK, Google Ads data via DataForSEO). All six UK pages that give a size say 1280 x 720: LightX, Canva, Snappa, IMResizer, TechSmith and Piktochart.
The AI Overviews do the same. The UK one opens with "The ideal YouTube thumbnail size is 1280 x 720 pixels", citing a Canva page that still has "2022" in its title.
Why does this happen?
Because pages copy each other, and an AI Overview summarises whatever is written most often.
Our test: 40 videos across 4 industry searches (half the businesses use an automatic frame)
On 13 October 2026 we pulled the top ten videos from YouTube search in Italy, using DataForSEO, for four queries: "taglio laser lamiera" (sheet metal laser cutting), "fotovoltaico con accumulo" (solar with battery storage), "ledwall" and "carrelli elevatori" (forklift trucks). For each video we compared the live thumbnail with the three frames YouTube generates automatically (the hq1, hq2 and hq3 files of every video). If it matched one of them, the thumbnail is an automatic frame.
It is a conservative count. A frame exported by hand and uploaded as an image counts as custom.
We then split channels into two groups: businesses selling the product or service searched for (manufacturers, subcontractors, dealers, training firms) and everyone else (creators, trade media, educators).
| Search (Italy) | Videos | From businesses | Businesses with automatic frame | Others with automatic frame |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| taglio laser lamiera | 10 | 6 | 3 | 1 of 4 |
| fotovoltaico con accumulo | 10 | 1 | 0 | 0 of 9 |
| ledwall | 10 | 5 | 2 | 0 of 5 |
| carrelli elevatori | 10 | 7 | 4 | 0 of 3 |
| Total | 40 | 19 | 9 (47%) | 1 of 21 (5%) |
Two things stand out.
First: where creators dominate, businesses almost disappear. On "fotovoltaico con accumulo" 9 videos out of 10 are from creators, with titles like "I threw €10,000 on the roof" and thumbnails built for the click. An installer's channel competes there against thumbnail professionals.
Second: where businesses do show up, one in two never chose the image. On "carrelli elevatori" 4 of the 7 business videos use YouTube's frame, including videos from STILL Italia and Montini. On "taglio laser lamiera" it is 3 of 6.
But those videos are still in the top ten, aren't they?
Yes. The thumbnail does not decide the search position: relevance, engagement and quality do, as explained in our guide to the YouTube algorithm. It decides how many people who see the video in a list actually click. On the home page and in suggested videos, where there is no position, it decides almost everything.
YouTube's own thumbnail and title tips put it plainly: "90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails". In our sample creators sit at 95%. Businesses at 53%.
Resolution, on the other hand, is mostly fine: 34 of 40 videos have at least an HD thumbnail (1280 x 720). The 6 without are three videos from 2018 and 2019 and three from one trade publication.
Half the business videos in our test use the image YouTube picked
You have just seen that 9 of 19 business videos show an automatic frame while the creators next to them design every thumbnail. We review the videos on your channel against the searches your customers make, on YouTube and on Google, and tell you which to fix first.
Book a strategy callHow to make a YouTube thumbnail for a business video (five rules you can check)
A good business thumbnail shows at a glance which problem the video solves. The rules below come from YouTube Help or from what the results pages show, not from personal taste.
1. Start from the customer's question, not your logo
The title says what the customer is looking for (more in our guide to titles, descriptions and tags). The thumbnail shows the result: the finished part, the LED wall switched on, the forklift in a narrow aisle. The logo can be there, small and always in the same corner.
2. Readable at phone size
YouTube Help says: "Try not to make the design too complex", use an easy-to-read font, and apply the rule of thirds. The simplest test: shrink the thumbnail to the size of a postage stamp on a phone. If you cannot tell what is in it, there is too much.
3. Keep the bottom-right corner clear
That is where YouTube overlays the video length. A price, a figure or a product name in that corner ends up covered.
4. Only promise what the video delivers
YouTube's thumbnail policy explicitly bans misleading thumbnails that trick viewers into thinking they will see something the video does not contain. There is a more practical reason too: YouTube's A/B test picks the winner on watch time, not clicks. A clickbait thumbnail that disappoints loses.
5. A system, not one image at a time
Same colours, same font, same logo position on every video. On a business channel most viewers arrive from search, and recognising the brand helps. Setting up the banner and profile picture is covered in our guide to a YouTube channel for business.
Canva or Adobe Express, with templates already at the right size, are enough to make them. If advanced features are on, Ask Studio can suggest thumbnails based on the video transcript: a starting point, not a finished thumbnail.
A/B testing titles and thumbnails (watch time wins, not clicks)
YouTube's A/B test, called "Test & compare", shows up to three titles, three thumbnails or three title and thumbnail pairs to different groups of viewers and keeps the one with the highest watch time. A test runs from a few days to a maximum of two weeks, according to the official page.
The rules to know before you start:
- desktop only, in YouTube Studio, with advanced features turned on;
- not available for Shorts, scheduled live streams or videos made for kids;
- editing the title or thumbnail during the test stops it;
- there are three outcomes: a winner, similar performance across options, or no significant difference.
For a business it is an underused tool. In Google Ads we do the same with ads: two versions, one metric, keep the one that performs. Here it costs nothing and the metric is already the right one. If you want to know what click-through rate really measures, we explained it for Google in our CTR guide; the numbers to read in YouTube Studio are in our guide to YouTube Analytics.
YouTube banner size and safe area (1235 x 338, not 1235 x 423)
Upload the channel banner at 2560 x 1440 pixels, with a minimum of 2048 x 1152 and a maximum file size of 6 MB. Text and logo belong in the central safe area of 1235 x 338 pixels, the only part visible on every device. These are the values on the channel branding page.
Here too, Google's Italian AI Overview on 13 October 2026 gave a different number: 1235 x 423, taken from the Clipchamp blog. That is 85 extra pixels of height, enough to crop the bottom of a logo on a phone.
"youtube banner size" gets 5,400 searches a month in the UK, almost as many as the thumbnail size query (Google Ads via DataForSEO, 12-month average).
Thumbnails on Google and in AI Overviews (the same image works three times)
For Google a valid thumbnail is a requirement: "To be eligible to appear in video features, a video must have a valid thumbnail image", says the Google Search Central documentation (minimum 60 x 30 pixels, file accessible to Googlebot). For videos on YouTube, YouTube handles it. For videos hosted on your own site, you do.
The same image then appears in three places: YouTube search, Google's video carousel and, more and more often, next to the sources in AI Overviews.
In the Italian AI Overview for "miniatura youtube" on 13 October 2026, 5 of 11 sources were YouTube videos, each shown with its thumbnail. On "dimensioni miniatura youtube" the video carousel sat right below the overview, above every website.
What gets a video cited we measured in our guide to YouTube videos in AI Overviews: the transcript matters most, not the thumbnail. But the thumbnail decides whether someone who sees the citation clicks on it. Nobody can promise a citation; a clear thumbnail is the part that depends only on you. If the video also needs to work on your site, the technical steps are in our video SEO guide, and making content readable for AI is what our GEO service does.
How to upload a YouTube thumbnail (three steps and a daily limit)
- On a computer or in the YouTube Studio app, open Content and select the video.
- In the Thumbnail section, upload your image instead of the suggested frames.
- Save. The new image can take a while to show everywhere.
If you cannot see the option, the channel is not verified. The rest of the upload process, from settings to visibility, is in our guide on how to upload a YouTube video. Shorts are a separate story, covered in YouTube Shorts for business.
YouTube thumbnail FAQs
3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9, according to YouTube Help checked on 13 October 2026. The minimum is 640 pixels wide. A 1280 x 720 image is accepted, but in the A/B test anything below 720p is reduced to 854 x 480.
Yes, according to the English YouTube Help page: in YouTube Studio on a computer, at 9:16 and 2160 x 3840 pixels. The Italian page still said otherwise on 13 October 2026. A/B testing is not available for Shorts.
It depends: the usual causes are an unverified account, the daily thumbnail limit and files over 2 MB uploaded from a phone. Community Guidelines strikes also reduce how many thumbnails you can upload.
Yes, if the new one is clearer, but it is better done with the A/B test in YouTube Studio than by eye. YouTube's own FAQs advise against changing a video that is already performing.
2560 x 1440 pixels recommended, minimum 2048 x 1152, maximum 6 MB. Keep text and logo inside the 1235 x 338 pixel safe area, which is visible on every device.
In short (and the thumbnail nobody has made yet)
Size: 3840 x 2160, 16:9, JPG under 2 MB.
Banner: 2560 x 1440, text and logo inside 1235 x 338.
Content: the result of the video, not the logo.
Check: the A/B test, which rewards watch time.
One last thing the test shows: on industry searches, businesses almost always compete with other businesses, and half of them never chose the image. On those results pages a carefully made thumbnail does not have to beat MrBeast. It has to beat a competitor's blurry frame. It is one of the few places on YouTube where a business starts ahead of creators, and almost nobody is using it.
